Customer brought in a bike with peanut butter in the shifters

Last Tuesday some guy rolls in with a mountain bike that wouldn't shift past 3rd gear. I popped the shifter cover and there was a thick brown paste all over the ratchet mechanism, smells like Skippy. Turns out his kid used the bike to carry lunch to school for a week, the sandwich melted in the frame bag and seeped down the cables. I spent $80 worth of labor cleaning it out with degreaser and a pick set, the customer just laughed and said he thought the shifting felt sticky. Has anyone else dealt with food getting into drivetrain parts in a weird way?

Chain snapped on a group ride, how do you carry a spare link?

Last Saturday I was about 12 miles into a fast group ride near Portland and my chain gave out on a hard shift going up a hill. It broke right at the pin, not the quick link, and scattered a few links onto the road before I could stop. I had a chain tool but no spare links on me, so I had to call for a ride home. Do you guys carry a master link or a few spare pins in your saddle bag, or do you just rely on the chain tool to shorten it enough to get home? I'm thinking about adding a quick link to my kit but not sure if it's worth the extra weight.

TIL the hard way that torque wrenches need recalibration

Last month I was doing a carbon fork install at my shop in Austin and the steerer bolt snapped at 5 Nm, way below spec. Turns out my torque wrench had been sitting in a drawer for 2 years getting bumped around. I sent it off for calibration, got it back with a note saying it was reading 30% low. Has anyone else had a wrench drift that bad without obvious damage?

Spent $80 on a torque wrench set, now I question all my old builds

Picked up a used Park Tool torque wrench kit from a retiring mechanic in Austin for $80. I always just went by feel before, especially on carbon parts, figured it was fine. First time I torqued a stem bolt to spec, it clicked way earlier than I expected, my hand was way off. Checked two more bolts on the same bike and same thing, I was overtorquing everything for years. Now I'm wondering how many cracked steerers or stripped threads I've caused without knowing. Anyone else switch to a torque wrench late and find out your instincts were garbage?

My old truing stand finally gave out, RIP Park TS-2

Been using the same Park TS-2 since I opened my shop in Portland back in 2009. Last Tuesday the little dial indicator bracket just snapped clean off, no warning. I rigged a zip tie and a caliper to finish a wheel build, but it felt so janky. Anyone else had a favorite tool die on them after years of faithful service, and what did you replace it with?

Torque wrench calibration drift caught after 200+ carbon builds

I trusted my click-style torque wrench for two seasons until a customer's seatpost clamp cracked at 5 Nm. Checked it against a beam wrench and it was showing 6.2 Nm, that's a 24% overshoot. Now I test both my wrenches every January with a simple bolt fixture, costs me ten minutes and saves a lot of frame warranties. Anyone else found their torque tools drifting faster than the manual says?

I was doing a routine check on my beam torque wrench last month before a big carbon frame job and decided to test it against a friend's digital unit. Turns out it was reading about 6 Nm low at the 12 Nm mark, which is scary for seatpost and stem work. Found out the spring inside had fatigued after roughly 240 uses over three seasons of shop work. I used to drown my chain in wet lube every few weeks, but after a chain snapped on me during a commute through downtown Seattle last spring, I gave drip wax a shot. The drivetrain stays way cleaner now, but I'm still figuring out how often to reapply it. What do you all use for topping up between full wax melts?

Customer swore his bike was 'fixing itself' after a chain swap

Last month a guy rolled into my shop in Portland with a chain that was so stretched it skipped on every gear. I showed him the wear gauge reading over 1% and he said, 'No, it's fine, I can feel it tightening up when I ride.' I let him take it for a spin around the block and he came back white as a ghost after the chain slipped on a hill. Any of you ever had a customer convinced their bike was self-healing? How do you talk them into spending the $28 without making them feel dumb?

Went back to a torque wrench after 8 years of feel-only

I used to just tighten cranks and stems by feel, mostly because I was lazy and my Park Tool TW-5 sat in a drawer. Last month I snapped a carbon seatpost clamp on a customer's bike during a test ride, so I dug out the torque wrench and set everything to spec. Last Tuesday in my shop in Spokane I had a carbon frame come in for a simple seatpost swap. My cheap beam torque wrench read 5 Nm but the clamp threads gave out at maybe 4, totally my fault for not testing it first. I told the owner straight up and ate the $60 repair cost for a new clamp and insert. Now I'm stuck debating whether I should drop $200 on a digital wrench or just keep using the calibrated feel method I learned from an old mechanic who never stripped anything. Has anyone else had a torque wrench lie to them and how did you handle the customer fallout?

Vent: this past saturday was a total cassette nightmare

Had three bikes come in with frozen freehubs in one day, all needing the full tear down and grease. One of them was a 9-speed commuter that looked like the owner rode through a salt marsh for a year, took me 45 minutes just to get the lockring off. Three brake bleeds in one afternoon, still can't get the lever feel right

Had a run of three bikes come in today, all needing brake bleeds, and the last one a Shimano setup from 2016 still has that spongy lever after two tries. I flushed it with fresh mineral oil, tapped the caliper, did everything by the book. Anyone else hit a wall with older brake systems that just won't cooperate no matter what you do?

Overheard a guy at the co-op talking about serial numbers on frames

I was at Boston Bikes last week and some older mechanic was telling a customer that you can date a vintage frameset down to the month by the serial number. I never bothered to look up mine but I did when I got home, turns out my old Trek is from June 1985. It changed how I think about the bike, like it has a real history now. Anyone else ever dig into their frame's serial number and find something cool?

My big choice between copper grease and anti-seize on a seized seatpost

I spent last weekend trying to pull a stuck aluminum seatpost out of a steel frame, and I had to decide between copper grease and regular anti-seize for the reinstall. I went with copper grease because I heard it handles heat better on older bikes. Has anyone else had better luck with one over the other on seized posts?

Loose headset on a 3-year-old gravel bike that drove me crazy for 2 months

I kept feeling a weird knocking sound from the front end of my bike whenever I hit bumps. I checked the hub, the spokes, even the rack bolts. Turned out it was just a loose headset that had worked itself free over time. I tightened the top cap bolt by about a quarter turn and the noise just vanished. Now I check the headset as part of my routine before every ride. Has anyone else had a simple fix like this hide for way too long?

Got screamed at by a customer over a $12 brake cable install

Last Tuesday this guy rolls into the shop in Denver with a 2010 Trek hybrid that sounded like a dying cat every time he braked. I quoted him $12 for a new cable plus labor and he nodded along. I replaced the cable, adjusted the calipers, test rode it around the block, everything felt solid. He comes back 20 minutes later screaming that his brakes are worse than before because the lever feels different now. I tried explaining that new cables stretch and settle after a few hard stops, but he wasn't hearing it. He demanded I put the old frayed cable back on for free. Has anyone else had customers freak out over a simple cable swap?

Three years into this shop job and I still can't get barrel adjusters to stop slipping

Been fighting a Trek road bike since last Tuesday where the rear derailleur cable keeps going slack after 10 miles. I swapped the cable three times and even put a fresh housing on it but that little plastic wedge just won't hold. Anyone else had to switch to those metal locking adjusters or am I missing something obvious?

Saw a huge difference after switching from spray lube to drip wax on my chain

I used to lube my chain every 200 miles with spray lube and it'd be caked in black gunk after two weeks. Switched to a drip wax about 3 months ago and the chain stays clean for at least 500 miles with just a wipe down. Anybody else notice their drivetrain parts lasting way longer with wax?

I always thought you could just eyeball chain wear until I had to replace a cassette and chainring way too early after ignoring a stretched chain for months. Has anyone else had a cheap chain cost them more in the long run?
