A barista's comment made me rethink how I hold my book

Was at a cafe off Beacon Street last week, and the guy making my tea noticed I was cracking the spine on my new mystery. He said he can always tell who's read a book before by the creases, and it hit me that I've been treating paperbacks like they're disposable. Has anyone else stopped caring about keeping books pristine after a stranger said something like that?
