Why did nobody tell me I was using my caulk gun wrong for 4 years?

Honestly, I was doing a bathroom trim job last weekend and my caulk kept coming out all lumpy and uneven. My neighbor walked over and asked why I wasn't cutting the tip at an angle like a normal person. I had just been snipping it straight across this whole time. Now I feel like an idiot but at least my baseboards finally look decent. Has anyone else had a basic tool epiphany way later than they should have?

I had the exact same thing happen with a putty knife. Used it flat for years, then a painter buddy told me to flex it and hold it at an angle. Night and day difference on spackle jobs, especially the big gaps. Once I stopped jamming it straight on, the finish was way smoother and I didn't have to sand as much. Sometimes you just need someone to point out the obvious thing you've been missing.

I mean, is it really that big of a deal? I've been snipping mine straight across for years and my caulk lines come out fine as long as you smooth it after. Maybe the angle thing helps a little but I doubt it's the reason your bathroom looked bad.
