Tried to fix a leaky faucet with a $5 washer kit, ended up flooding my kitchen at 11pm

Was replacing a worn out washer in my bathroom sink last Tuesday, but I twisted the supply line wrong and water sprayed everywhere until I found the shutoff valve under the house. Has anyone else had a simple DIY job turn into a disaster because of one little mistake?

Yeah flooded my basement last fall trying to swap out a toilet fill valve. Forgot to shut off the water to the toilet, not the whole house, so when I pulled the old valve off it was like a fire hydrant. Had to run outside in my bare feet at midnight to kill the main line. Soaking wet, freezing cold, and my wife still brings it up at dinner parties.
