Tried caulking my own bathtub and made a total mess

I was redoing the bathroom in my house near Dallas and thought I'd save some cash by caulking the tub myself. I got the wrong kind of caulk, some cheap acrylic stuff that wouldn't stick to the tile, and it ended up all over my hands and the floor. After 3 tries and a lot of scraping, I just gave up and called a handyman who fixed it in 20 minutes with silicone. Has anyone else had a caulk job go sideways like that?
