That "tried a water shutoff valve replacement" part hit home hard. I did the exact same thing last year and thought I had it all figured out until I heard that horrible dripping sound. Ended up having to rip out half the drywall in the hallway because the pipe was actually worse than I thought. My neighbor came over with his shop vac and we spent three hours sopping up water while my wife just stood there shaking her head. Have you fixed the leak fully yet or are you still dealing with the aftermath?

Oh man, shop vac and neighbor solidarity - that's the real homeowner experience right there. What finally worked for me was using those SharkBite push-fit connectors instead of messing with compression fittings. I know they're a little pricier upfront, but after that drywall disaster, I just didn't trust myself to do it right with the old-school stuff. I also started keeping a water key and a couple extra shutoff valves in my tool bucket for emergencies. For my leak, I ended up cutting out a whole section of pipe from the basement access point instead of trying to patch the original spot, which was a game changer because I could actually reach everything without ripping into more walls. That hallway is still patched up with some mismatched drywall mud from last fall, so no, the aftermath is definitely still there but at least the dripping stopped.
