Warning: I started saying 'I don't know, but let me find out' and my complaint calls dropped by half
I work the returns desk at a big hardware store in Cleveland and for 2 years I tried to answer every question on the spot, even stuff about plumbing codes I had zero clue about. Last March a guy came in mad about a $47 sump pump and instead of guessing I just said 'I don't know, but let me find out' and walked him to the aisle with the guy who actually knows pumps. He left happy and didn't ask for a manager, which almost never happens. Now I use that line maybe 10 times a shift and my callbacks to corporate went from like 6 a week to 2. Has anyone else tried just admitting you don't know instead of making something up?
