Overheard a customer complain about a 50 cent coupon that expired yesterday and it took everything in me not to laugh
I was ringing up their order at the grocery store and they went on a 5 minute rant about how the store was 'out to get them' over half a dollar, which made me realize that some people are just looking for something to be mad about no matter what, has anyone else had a customer blow up over something that small?

Wait have you ever thought about what happens to the expired coupons after the cashier tosses them? In my experience, some people get so worked up over the 50 cents that they totally miss the fact that most stores actually track how many expired coupons get used by mistake and that can flag the cashier for a write-up. So honestly the customer's anger is misplaced because you're saving them from possibly getting an employee in trouble. Your mileage may vary but I've seen managers get real strict about coupon policy enforcement after too many slip through. Take this with a grain of salt but sometimes the smallest things reveal the biggest gaps in how people understand the system.

Hmm, I don't know if I'd go that far. In my experience, most stores just toss expired coupons in the trash and never think about them again. Those tracking systems sound more like something a big chain might do, but your average grocery store? Probably not. I've seen cashiers accidentally accept expired coupons plenty of times and nothing happened. Your mileage may vary, but I think people are reading too much into a piece of paper that was going to get thrown out anyway.

Isn't a 50 cent coupon kind of worth getting upset over though... especially if they planned their shopping around it? I mean sure, the cashier didn't make the rules, but I could see how a person might get caught up in the moment when things don't go as expected. Sometimes a small thing just feels bigger when you're already having a rough day, you know?
