Ngl that one customer who said my greeting sounded 'robotic' actually helped me get better at my job

I work at a Target in Austin and this lady probably in her 50s comes through my line last month. I go 'Hi how are you today?' like I always do and she just stops and says 'Can you say that like you actually mean it? You sound like a robot.' I was so embarrassed at first but honestly she was right. I changed it up. Now I just say 'Hey what's up' or 'How's your day going?' in my normal voice. Way less awkward. Has anyone else gotten feedback that stung at first but actually helped?

Bro wait she really said you sounded robotic? That's wild. I had a similar thing happen at my old job where a customer told me my "have a nice day" sounded like a recording. I switched to throwing in a "stay cool out there" or "take it easy" and it felt way more natural. Honestly that kind of blunt feedback is a gift even if it stings at first.

Wait did she seriously call you a robot to your face? That's wild. I would've been mortified too but yeah she had a point. I had this one regular at my old grocery store job who told me my "find everything okay?" sounded like I was reading off a script. I started just saying "hey, you need anything weird today?" and it actually made people laugh. Sometimes customers just want to see you're a real person and not some NPC in their shopping trip.
