My manager told me to "just smile more" and a customer threw a drink at me 20 minutes later

This was at a fast food place in Austin about 2 years ago. I had a line out the door and a grill that kept burning everything. My manager, this older lady named Carol, kept telling me to smile so customers don't think I'm mad. I tried it. Smiled at this one guy who was yelling about his burger being wrong. He thought I was making fun of him and chucked his soda over the counter at me. Carol didn't say anything about smiling after that. Has anyone else gotten advice that backfired that bad?
