I finally cracked after a customer told me to smile more on a Tuesday in May
I worked at a grocery store in Portland for about 2 years. This one lady, probably in her 50s, comes through my line with a cart full of organic veggies. She looks at me and says, 'You know, you'd look so much prettier if you just smiled.' I was having a rough day, my back hurt from standing 6 hours straight. I just froze and said, 'Ma'am, I'm not a decoration, I'm here to ring up your kale.' She got all huffy and asked for my manager. My manager actually backed me up and told her smiling wasn't in my job description. That moment stuck with me because it reminded me how people see retail workers as furniture instead of people. Has anyone else had a customer say something that just made you snap?

Think smiling at customers is part of the job though.
