Warning: my smart thermostat decided my house was on a secret schedule last Tuesday
Last Tuesday around 2 in the morning, my smart thermostat kicked the heat up to 78 degrees on its own and woke me out of a dead sleep. I checked the app and it showed a "comfort schedule" I never set, with blocks every day at 2am and 4am. I unplugged the thing for 10 minutes, plugged it back, and it did the exact same thing the next night. Someone on a forum told me it was the utility company doing a demand response test, which sounds like the kind of thing people would call a conspiracy until it happens to them. Has anyone else caught their thermostat running a schedule they never made?
The demand response thing is real but thats not even the weird part to me. What gets me is the 2am and 4am blocks. Utility programs usually hit during peak hours like late afternoon or early evening when everyone's AC is blasting, not when you're asleep. Nobody is stress testing the grid at 2 in the morning. Thats when power demand is at its lowest, so a "test" then makes zero sense. Which makes me wonder if its not the utility at all but the thermostat maker itself, like some firmware update gone wrong or a schedule pushed from their server side that got mixed up between accounts. I'd check if your device is still under warranty and call the company directly, because a utility test at those hours doesnt add up and I'd want to know who is actually telling my house what to do while I'm sleeping.
@emma_hayes80 the "who is actually telling my house what to do" line reminded me of my old wifi kettle that started boiling itself at 5am for a week straight, turned out it was still logged into my ex's account. Anyway that firmware mixup idea tracks, my neighbor got his garage door schedule swapped with some guy in Ohio and spent a month opening a stranger's door.
