That time a geologist in Moab showed me how the rock layers tell a different story than what textbooks say

He pointed out how a certain red sandstone layer in Arches National Park is actually upside down from a ancient quake, which got me wondering how many other 'established' timelines are just accepted without question. Has anyone else found physical evidence that challenges the official geological record?

...and honestly that kind of stuff makes you realize how much of science is just the best story we can tell with the pieces we find. Like, I remember reading about how the whole theory of the Colorado Plateau being this calm, slow uplift got challenged by some tilted rock formations nobody could explain for years. Turns out the whole thing might have had violent, fast shifts that rearranged everything (think of it like nature shaking a puzzle box). Once you see one example of a flipped layer or a misplaced deposit, it's hard not to wonder if the whole geologic column is full of these quiet little lies we just call "anomalies" because nobody wants to rewrite the textbook.

I saw something similar in the Grand Canyon a few years back. A ranger pointed out how a basalt layer on top was actually older than the limestone below it in one spot. Turns out a massive landslide flipped a whole section of the cliff around. It really made me question how much of the standard timeline is just a best guess based on local conditions.

Kinda makes you wonder what else we've got backwards in life.
