That broken water main at 3am changed how I prep for storms

I was staying at a friend's place in Houston when the pipe burst and flooded half the basement before we even heard it. After cleanup, I grabbed a $20 moisture alarm from Home Depot for my own place has anyone else set up early warning systems for stuff like this?

Damn right, man. I remember my neighbor had a water heater blow out while he was on vacation, flooded his whole garage and ruined his tools. That was a tough cleanup job. @allen.quinn you're spot on about old hoses too, I've seen washing machine hoses rot out and spray water everywhere nobody even notices until the floor is soaked. That moisture alarm saved my buddy's basement when a pipe froze and cracked last winter, water was pooling for hours before we caught it otherwise. Now I got a couple of them scattered around, one near the main shutoff valve and one under the bathroom sink where pipes love to drip. It's a cheap fix but beats paying for new drywall and flooring any day.

Used to think those moisture sensors were overkill, figured you'd just notice a leak eventually. But after seeing a burst pipe soak drywall and flooring in under an hour, yeah that changed my mind completely. It's not just about storms either, old water heaters or washing machine hoses can fail any time for no reason. I put one near my water heater and under the kitchen sink, cheap peace of mind for $20. Storms add another layer of risk with power outages making sump pumps useless. One sensor near the basement floor would've saved my buddy a lot of drywall work.
