The $2 taco that beat my $9 burrito bowl, hands down

Last week I grabbed a street taco from a cart on 5th Ave and it put my usual Chipotle order to shame, both in flavor and price. Am I the only one sleeping on the independent carts while we all line up for the big chains?

There's also the whole freshness angle nobody talks about. Those carts are cooking in small batches all day, so the meat sits in the pan for maybe twenty minutes. The big chains hold stuff in those steam trays for hours, and you can taste the difference, especially in the chicken. Plus, the cart guy remembers your order after two visits, which is worth something in a city where nobody makes eye contact. The overhead of a storefront is exactly what you're paying for with that burrito bowl, and it's not making the food taste better. Street vendors skip the rent, the seating, the marketing, and put all that into the actual ingredients. Once you notice the turnaround time difference, it's hard to go back.
