Rant: Took me 45 minutes to find a cheap filling dinner at the grocery store last night

I swear I walked every aisle of my local Aldi in Ohio trying to stretch a $10 bill into dinner for two. I kept picking things up then putting them back because the price per ounce was just too high. Finally landed on a bag of lentils for $1.29, a can of diced tomatoes for $0.85, and some heavily marked down onions for $0.50. Got home and made a lentil soup that easily fed us both with leftovers for lunch today. Anyone else spend way too long staring at prices in the store before just giving up and making beans?

Remember doing the exact same math in my local Kroger a few weeks ago, just trying to make a bag of groceries work without feeling ripped off. Lentils and rice have saved me more times than I can count when money gets tight at the end of the month. It's exhausting having to mentally calculate every single item like you're taking a test, isn't it?

I mean I get where you're coming from but honestly I see it a little different. For me it's kind of a game now, almost like a challenge to see how far I can stretch a twenty. Idk maybe it's just me but I find some weird satisfaction in figuring out the right combo of stuff to get the most bang for my buck. It's not ideal that we have to do this obviously, but I almost feel like I'm beating the system a tiny bit when I walk out with a full bag. Plus lentils and rice are actually good if you cook them right, I've gotten pretty creative with cumin and garlic powder over the years.
