PSA: Stop buying the bulk seasoning packs at Walmart without checking the price per ounce

I grabbed the big garlic powder bottle for $4.98 last week like I always do, then walked past the spice aisle and saw the store brand shaker was $1.22 for the same amount. Math worked out to me paying triple for the same thing for the last two years. Anybody else caught by this on other stuff?

Used to tell myself the big bottles were better value cause you got more product. Few months back I grabbed the store brand cayenne for a recipe and realized it was like half the price of the McCormick stuff. Checked the weight and it was the same 2.5 ounces. Felt pretty dumb standing there in the aisle. Now I just grab whatever's cheapest on the shelf. Bulk packs and brand names seem to be the worst deals most of the time.

Well, how dumb do I have to be to learn this lesson twice? I did the exact same thing with chili powder last month, grabbed the big name brand bottle without even glancing at the price tag. Got home and my wife pointed out the store brand was sitting right next to it for a dollar less. I think I just like feeling like I'm getting a deal when really I'm paying for the fancy label. Guess I'll start doing the math from now on before my wallet files for divorce over my lazy shopping habits.
