Oh man, this is exactly why I always bring one of those little portable smoke detectors when I go to cons now. I had a similar thing happen at a smaller show in Dallas last year where a vendor had a whole extension cord setup that was clearly overheating, you could smell the plastic melting. My advice is to always check where the exits are as soon as you walk into a hall, and if you see any cords running across walkways or daisy chained power strips, that's a big red flag. Don't be afraid to tell con staff right away if something looks off, most of the time they'll take it seriously because they don't want a lawsuit. Also, keep an eye on those big LED display cases, I've seen those get scary hot after a few hours.

yeah but real talk, "almost got burned" is kind of vague and could mean different things. were you actually in danger of getting physically hurt by fire or just had a bad experience with a vendor trying to scam you? because i've seen people say stuff like that and it ends up being they got a bad vibe from someone selling bootleg merch. not saying your thing wasn't serious, just wondering if we're on the same page here. if it was an actual fire hazard that's a whole different level of warning.
