Turns out, my aunt is a secret board game champion

We had a family reunion and dug out an old Monopoly set. She wiped the floor with all of us, and now we're planning a rematch next month. It's hilarious how competitive she got.

Hold up, I don't think every board game turns people into sharks. Sure, Monopoly and Scrabble like jennyk62 mentioned will do it, those games are built for it. But you bring out a cooperative game or something simple like Catan, and that cutthroat side just doesn't come out the same way. It really depends on the game itself.

My grandma used to destroy everyone at Scrabble. I mean, she'd pull out words like 'qi' and 'za' and none of us even knew they were real. We found out she played in a weekly club at her library for like twenty years. It was wild to see her calm, quiet self turn into this word game shark.

My aunt Margaret has this dog-eared list of every valid two-letter Scrabble word. She keeps it in her recipe box like it's a state secret. Watching her drop 'xi' on a triple word score with a straight face is a thing of beauty. We don't even challenge her anymore, we just accept the loss. It's humbling how a sweet lady in knitting sweaters can end your game in three turns.
