The quiet shift in mini painting over the last 5 years is wild
I got back into painting minis around 2019 after a 10 year break. Back then everyone was using Citadel paints and drybrushing everything. Now I see more people using contrast paints and airbrushes for basecoats. Walked into my local shop last week and the guy at the register said they sell more Vallejo and Army Painter than Citadel now. What changed? Was it just the cost or did people get tired of the pots? Has anyone else noticed their group moving away from the big brands?

oh man hard disagree on this one lol. i actually think the shift back TO citadel is happening right now if you look close. people went wild for contrast and army painter dips for like a year but now everyone i know is going back to the old school layer and highlight method because those speedpaints just don't hold up on the table. the texture gets weird and the color separation is awful on anything with flat surfaces. plus citadel fixed their pots like 3 years ago and the new formula is way better than vallejo for coverage on most colors. i watched a guy at my local shop last week swap his whole army painter rack for citadel again lol. and honestly the airbrush trend is already dying down too, people are tired of cleaning them and just want to sit and brush.
