The player count math on older games surprised me at a con

I was at Gen Con last month and picked up a 1980s classic I'd never tried. The box said 2 to 6 players, so I figured it would shine with four. But we had six at the table, and it took nearly 3 hours for what should have been 90 minutes. I looked up the designer's original notes online that night. Turns out the 6-player mode was added later just to sell more copies, and the real sweet spot is exactly 3. It made me rethink every old game I own. Now I check the publication year and any errata before I set up. Has anyone else run into a game where the listed range is misleading?

Kinda wild how the box lies to you like that, right? Did you end up hunting down errata for other old games in your collection after that, or just the ones you actually plan to play?
