That week I played 12 games of Catan in 5 days and snapped
I used to think Catan was just okay, you know, a nice opener. But last March my buddy Mark got the 5-6 player expansion and we went nuts playing every night after work. I finally saw how the trading phase creates this whole social drama (like watching someone talk their way out of getting robbed). The moment that flipped me was when I traded two sheep for a brick while knowing full well I was about to win, and Mark just stared at me in disbelief. Has anyone else had a game completely reset how you feel about a classic?

Oh great, another person who discovered that Catan is actually a psychological warfare simulator disguised as a board game. That moment when you trade away useless resources while wearing your best poker face is basically a rite of passage. Mark should have seen it coming though, nobody gets that enthusiastic about two sheep unless they're cooking something up. Next thing you know, you'll be hoarding development cards like they're winning lottery tickets.

I started keeping a little notepad of everyone's trades after my third game, and it genuinely helped me spot patterns. Like, Jake always offers bricks when he's actually trying to build roads to block me, so now I just say no flat out. It's crazy how much you can pick up on once you start paying attention to who's hoarding what. Honestly, the best move I made was refusing to trade resources unless I was getting two of something I needed back, even if it meant waiting a few rounds.
