Spent 3 hours trying to figure out why Catan kept crashing my game night

I run a weekly board game night at my place in Austin, and last month we sat down to play Catan. Everything went fine until the third round, when two players realized their settlements were overlapping on a hex we'd set wrong. It took me 3 hours to re-read the rulebook, re-lay the board, and convince everyone to restart. Has anyone else hit a rule snag that killed your whole night before?

At my old place in Denver we had a copy of Catan where the number tokens got mixed in with a bag of poker chips, took us a full hour just sorting those little circles out. But your situation makes me wonder how many people actually go back and read the rules after they mess something up, or do they just fudge it to keep the game going? Did anyone at your table actually want to restart, or was it just you pushing for a fair game? Because I've seen groups where one person cares about the rules and everyone else just wants to keep rolling dice, and that tension alone can kill a night faster than any broken settlement.
