My friend told me to stop trying to win at Catan and just block people

Tbh, I always tried to build the longest road in Catan and lost. My buddy Mike said to forget winning and just mess with the leader by placing settlements to cut them off. Last game night, I did that to Sarah who was ahead, and she got so mad she couldn't expand. I ended up coming in second, which is way better than my usual last place. Has anyone else won more by just playing defense like that?

Totally agree about messing with the leader, I started blocking people too and my scores shot up!

Blocking people just makes the game drag on forever. Last time someone did that, we all got stuck with no good spots to build and the game took three hours. It's more fun to actually try to win yourself instead of just ruining someone else's plan. You might get second place, but you'll never learn how to actually build a good strategy.
