I compared thorough prep versus just slapping on a new coat of paint for a 20 year old game board restoration
The piece I sanded lightly and used primer on came out looking factory fresh while the other side I tried to shortcut ended up with bubbling and peeling after just two plays, has anyone else wrecked a project by skipping the prep work?

That "factory fresh" line really stuck with me cause its exactly what people chase when they skip prep. The thing is old game boards have decades of oils from hands soaking into the cardboard, so primer isnt optional its basically the only thing stopping that reaction between fresh paint and old gunk. Most people dont realize the bubbling is actually the solvents pushing out residue that shouldve been sealed first.

My buddy tried to fix up an old Risk board in one afternoon with just spray paint and no sanding. Looked decent for about a week until the paint started flaking off onto everything like dandruff. He ended up spending twice as long stripping it down and doing it right the second time.
