Had the BEST game night last Tuesday after months of dud sessions

So my group has been in a rut for like 4 months. We'd pick a game, someone would get bored 20 minutes in, we'd switch, repeat. Just nothing clicked. Then last week I brought out an old copy of Cosmic Encounter I found at a thrift store for $8. All 5 of us played for almost 3 hours straight, no one checked their phone, and my friend Dave actually yelled when someone blocked his win. It was the first time in ages everyone left happy. Anyone else ever break a slump with a random old game?

Oh man, Cosmic Encounter is such a wild card. I once tried to break my group's slump with a copy of Talisman I found in a basement, and we spent two hours arguing over the rules before someone accidentally flipped the board. At least your $8 thrift store gamble paid off. I swear old games have some kind of good luck charm because they're so janky they force everyone to just roll with it. My buddies still give me grief about the Talisman fiasco, but last month I snagged a dusty copy of Survive! and we had the same kind of screaming match you described. Nothing like watching your friend's carefully planned tribe of meeples get eaten by a shark to bring people together.

Old Talisman wars are legendary, @benbrown. Survive! shark attacks beat rulebook fights any day though.
