Had a chat with my game group that made me rethink our whole collection

Met up with my usual crew last night at Dave's place in Portland. He pointed at our shelf of 40+ unplayed games and said 'we're collecting boxes, not playing games.' That hit me hard because we spent like $300 last year on new stuff we never even opened. We ended up just playing one game all night, really dug into it, and it was way more fun than rushing through three. Anyone else feel like they buy more games than they actually get to the table?

That "collecting boxes, not playing games" line really hit home. My buddy Mark had a similar wakeup call last year when he realized he had like 15 Kickstarters still sealed in the shrink wrap. He made a rule that he can't buy anything new until he plays through all his unopened stuff. I think he's down to like 8 boxes now but man it took him almost a year to get that far.

Does your buddy Mark actually enjoy playing through all those games, or is it starting to feel like homework? I get the appeal of clearing the backlog, but for me the hunt and the collection itself is part of the fun, not just the playing. As long as you're not going into debt or lying to yourself about what you're doing, I don't see the harm in having a few sealed boxes on the shelf.
