Fact check: I looked up how many copies of Monopoly get sold each year and it broke my brain

So I was on a board game wiki rabbit hole last night, you know how you just click link after link. I ended up on the Monopoly page and saw they sell like 3 million copies a year worldwide. That number is insane to me because every board game geek I know hates Monopoly. We complain about the roll-and-move mechanics and the player elimination and how it takes forever. But clearly the general public loves it. My question is: are we the weird ones for hating it, or is the general public just wrong? I feel like there's a split here and I want to know where you all land on this. Has anyone else looked up a random board game stat and been floored by it?

Oh totally, the Monopoly sales stat is one of those things that makes you question reality. The real mind-bender is that most people buying it are giving it as a gift to a kid or a family that doesn't own a copy yet, not because they're board game enthusiasts. So you've got this cycle where people buy it because they think it's the default board game, and then it sits on shelves for years, maybe played once. The board game community is just a tiny blip of people who actually care about game design, so the general public is just repeating the same purchase out of habit.

Nah, the general public just wants a familiar game they already know how to play.
