Warning: my adoption agency in Reno gave me outdated contact info for my son's birth father
Last week I finally tried to reach out to my son's birth father after 3 years of silence, and the agency in Reno handed me a phone number that's been disconnected since 2021. They never updated their files, and now I'm stuck without a way to tell him our son is asking about medical history. I called their office twice, and the second time the caseworker admitted they lost track of his new address after he moved to Phoenix. Has anyone else gotten stale information from their agency, and how did you track down the right person?

Tracking down a birth parent through an adoption agency is a mess because agencies only keep the file open as long as someone pays them or the case stays active. Once that file goes cold, they have zero reason to update anything. Here's the angle nobody brings up: the agency may still have his old signed release forms or intake paperwork with a Social Security number or employer listed, and in most states you can request your full case file by law. That file often has way more than a phone number, like old emergency contacts, a work address, or a relative's name they used as a reference. Ask for your complete file in writing, not just a records request over the phone, because they have to hand over what they actually have. Then cross check those old leads on free people search sites or voter records in Phoenix. The agency screwed up, but the paper trail behind that stale number is usually where the real lead is hiding.
