Took my 5 year old to meet his birth mom for the first time last week

I was dead set against it for like 3 years but his therapist pointed out he was drawing the same empty chair over and over so I caved. We did a short park visit and he just sat on the swing and smiled the whole time, anyone else change their mind about contact and how did you handle the first meeting?

Oh man, I had a similar situation with my daughter a few years back. I was the one dragging my feet too, worried about all the what-ifs. She kept asking about her birth mom, and I finally realized I was letting my own fear get in the way of what she needed. The first meeting was at a playground, and she just ran off to the slide without a care. I felt like a fool for worrying so much. Your boy on that swing says it all.

That playground story really got me, especially the part about her running off to the slide like it was no big deal. I think us parents build up these huge scenarios in our heads and the kids just take it all in stride. Your daughter was clearly ready and you were brave enough to let it happen, even when you were scared. That's actually really cool and I bet she'll remember that you listened to her. Good for you for pushing through the worry.
