Serious question, my birth mom visit at 16 was a disaster
I was in a diner in Cleveland with my birth mom for the first time in ten years, and she spent the whole hour complaining about my adoptive parents' cooking. I ended up just walking out to the parking lot and waiting for my ride. Has anyone else had a reunion that just went completely wrong from the start?

The way that birth mom fixated on the cooking reminds me of how some people just can't handle big emotional moments so they latch onto the first small thing they can complain about instead. I see it all the time at family gatherings where someone will rant about the temperature of the food rather than face the awkward silence of a relative they haven't seen in years. It's like their brain short-circuits and they go straight into petty mode because actually dealing with the real feelings is way too hard.

she spent the whole hour complaining about my adoptive parents cooking" oh man that is rough. my birth mom showed up late to our first meeting and then spent 20 minutes going on about how her new boyfriend's dog was more loyal than any kid could be. like okay cool thanks for that. i just sat there nodding while she rambled about the dog's favorite chew toys. some people really don't know how to read the room in these situations.
