I wrote my son a letter for his 18th birthday, mailed it to his adoptive parents' old address, and it came back marked 'return to sender'.

Ouch, that's a gut punch. Did you have any other way to get in touch with them, or was the letter your last shot?

Maybe they moved on purpose to avoid contact. Have you tried looking for them online?
