I finally caved and paid for a private mediator
After my daughter's adoptive family and I hit a wall over holiday visits, I dropped about $1200 on a professional mediator who specializes in open adoptions. We had one virtual session that felt awkward, but by the second one, we actually drafted a clear, written plan for the next two years. It saved our relationship from getting more tense. Has anyone else used a mediator and did it help long-term?

My neighbor paid $300 for a mediator and then the mediator ghosted her after the first session.

Why do we wait so long to pay for help?

That "wait so long" part hits hard. We treat our problems like they'll fix themselves if we just ignore them. It's cheaper to pretend it's not broken, right? But then a small leak becomes a flooded basement. You end up paying ten times more for the emergency fix. Why not just call someone when you first notice the drip?
