Pro tip: give every show 4 episodes, not 1, after my brother called me out at Thanksgiving
My brother asked what I was watching back in November and I said I quit this crime drama after the first episode because the pilot felt slow. He just looked at me and said "you gave up after 45 minutes, some of these shows don't find their feet till episode 4." I got defensive about it, but he was right, because I went back to that same show on a rainy Saturday and by episode 4 I was three seasons deep in about two weeks. The pilot has to set up a whole world, introduce 9 characters, and explain the rules, so of course it drags, and I was judging the whole thing on the worst episode I'd ever see. I started checking how long a season is before I commit, too, because a 6 episode British show is a way easier yes than a 22 episode network thing. Now I keep a little note on my phone of shows I bailed on early so I can circle back when I have a free weekend. Has anyone else gone back to a show they dropped at episode 1 and ended up loving it?
Been there with a few shows where the pilot almost made me quit for good. Best move is to watch the first four in a row without judging, because pilots are basically a to do list for the whole series and they almost always feel stiff. Also check episode count before you start so a short season doesn't scare you off, and keep that list handy for when a rainy weekend shows up.
