Overheard a guy at the laundromat say The Wire is 'too slow' and I had to bite my tongue

He was maybe 20 minutes into episode 3 and already checking his phone, so I get it's not for everyone, but calling it slow misses the whole point of how it builds a world over 5 seasons. Has anyone else had to defend a classic show to someone who just wouldn't give it a fair shot?

Three playthroughs in and the slow burn still loses me every single time around hour two. I get that the pacing is the whole point, but the first act has maybe 40 minutes of actual story buried under endless walking and menu fiddling. My buddy swears it clicks by the halfway mark, but I've yet to make it there without dropping the game for a week. Maybe I'm just too impatient, but a movie that takes this long to set up its third act hook would've been panned.
