Found out The Wire only got 46 Emmy nominations total

I was reading a breakdown on Vulture last night about underrated shows and couldn't believe The Wire only got nominated for Emmys 46 times across all five seasons. That's less than some mediocre comedies get in three years. How does a show that's consistently called one of the best ever get so snubbed by awards voters?

Wait, you're telling me The Wire only got 46 nominations total for everything? I used to think people were just being dramatic when they said awards don't mean anything, but that kinda changes my mind honestly. Like, that show is so well written and acted it still gets brought up all the time today. And you're right, some basic comedy show that nobody remembers gets way more nods. It's crazy how much the voters just didn't get what The Wire was doing with all those storylines about the city and the systems. Makes me wonder how many other great shows got overlooked just because they weren't flashy enough for award people.

Actually I gotta be a little careful here... 46 nominations isn't across the whole show for everything, that's the total number of Emmy nominations the show received overall. But yeah, it only won two of them. For a show that's constantly ranked top five of all time, that's still pretty wild. Like, Modern Family got something like 85 nominations just for its first few seasons. The Wire's problem was it came out when HBO was already the king of prestige TV, and voters just didn't connect with Baltimore and all those layers of institutional rot. Crazy it never even got a Best Drama nod until the very last season.
