Bought the full box set of a show I'd never seen, best $45 I've spent this month

I was scrolling through a used DVD store in Portland last weekend and found the complete run of a British crime drama from the early 2000s. $45 for all 4 seasons. Never heard of it before but the cover looked cool and the guy behind the counter said it was underrated. Man was he right. I've been binge watching it every night after work and I'm already on season 3. The writing is so tight and the main detective is this grumpy older lady who just doesn't care about office politics. It totally beats paying for another streaming service that I'd probably cancel anyway. Has anyone else taken a risk on a blind box set purchase and hit gold? What show was it?

Blind buys are the best way to go if you know what to look for. I grabbed a random box set of an old Canadian sci-fi series once for like $20 and it ended up being one of the smartest shows I've ever watched. The trick is to check the back cover for the production company and maybe read one review on your phone before paying. Also, used DVD stores usually have a return policy if the discs are scratched, so test the first disc right away. That grumpy detective show sounds like a solid find, those British dramas from that era are usually gold.

Ha, I'm the idiot who once blind bought a "horror" box set and got a nature documentary about slugs, so my track record says check the reviews first. But you're right about testing discs right away, I learned that one the hard way too.
