Saw a mechanic at a race in Boulder fix a bent hanger with a wrench and a rock
I was at a local crit in Boulder last summer and watched this old school mechanic straighten a guy's rear derailleur hanger with just a 5mm hex wrench and a flat rock off the ground. No gauge, no alignment tool, just eyeballing it while the rider was about to line up. He got it shifting perfect through all gears in under 2 minutes. Made me realize I rely way too much on expensive tools for stuff I could do with basic feel. Anyone else ever fix something mid-race with just what you had on hand?

Wait, that's Boulder not Boulder, right? Colorado? The ground out there is mostly decomposed granite and sandstone, not flat river rocks you'd find in a creek bed. I've bent plenty of hangers with a rock but it's usually a piece of asphalt or a curb, not a smooth flat rock.
