Remember when a shop day was just a box of old parts and a pot of coffee?
Had this crazy Tuesday back in '09 at the old shop in Boise... a guy brought in a rusted-out Schwinn Varsity from the 70s, said he found it in a barn. We spent the whole afternoon just cleaning and soaking the stem bolt in penetrating oil, talking about how bikes used to be built. The whole thing cost him maybe $15 in parts, but the look on his face when it rolled out... makes you miss those simple fixes. Anyone else get a bike in that was basically a time capsule?

Honestly that sounds like the best kind of shop day. Tbh a can of WD-40 and some steel wool can feel like magic on those old finds. Had a similar thing with a crusty three speed last fall, just patiently working through the grease and grime. That feeling when the chain finally runs quiet again is better than any new bike sale.

Yeah 'better than any new bike sale' - that hit hard. Those old three-speeds are a different animal. Everything on them is meant to be taken apart and put back together, not just tossed in a dumpster. New bikes just don't have that soul. It's like they're made to be disposable, like a cheap toy. But a crusty old Schwinn or Raleigh, that's a bike you can pass down to your kid's kid. Feels like we've lost something, honestly.
