Question about a rear axle that snapped on a customer's ride two blocks from the shop
Last Tuesday I was test riding a rebuilt commuter around the block when the rear axle let go at the dropout, and the wheel locked up hard enough to skid me to a stop at the corner of 5th and Main. The hub had been serviced by someone else before it came to me and I never pulled the cones to check the axle threads, so now I'm wondering what else I skipped that day. Does anyone here have a checklist for used hub inspections, or do you just trust the bearing feel and move on?
Fifth and Main is right by that Thai place with the weird hours, so at least you got a story out of it. But the bearing feel thing is kind of a trap, a hub can spin smooth as butter and still have threads half chewed through from someone overtightening the cones. You gotta pull the axle and look at the threads and the cone faces, that's the only way to really know.
