I used to think a quick-release front wheel was always secure enough
A customer's wheel came off mid-descent on Mount Tam last week because the lawyer tabs weren't engaged. How do you all handle the safety talk about this without sounding condescending?

Mount Tam is a brutal place for that to happen. When you see a bike come in with the lever open, do you point at the tabs and ask them to show you how they work, or do you just close it for them? I've found making them do the motion themselves sticks better than a lecture.

Oh, that's a tough spot to be in for sure. I completely agree with you, @lucas63, making them do it themselves is the only way it really sinks in. Just closing it for them means they'll likely make the same mistake next time. A quick, "Hey, can you show me how you close that?" gets them to think it through. It feels a bit awkward sometimes, but it's the kind thing to do in the long run.
