Had a wheel explode on me during a group ride Sunday morning

I know everyone loves aluminum rims for durability but my front rim cracked right at the spoke bed about 18 miles into a 40 mile ride near Maplewood Park. Tire blew out instantly and I almost went over the bars. I've been running these Velocity rims for about 3 years with no issues but people swear aluminum is bulletproof. Has anyone else had an aluminum rim fail like that on a long ride?

Yeah, nothing's truly bulletproof no matter what people say. I've seen aluminum rims blow up on random potholes and even just from heat buildup on long descents. Three years of use is a lot of fatigue for anything, especially if you're riding hard.

Yeah that's fair but just to nitpick a little, aluminum doesn't really fail from heat buildup alone. It's usually the braking surface getting too hot and causing the tire to blow off the rim, not the rim itself cracking from the heat.
