Can we talk about how bottom bracket shells went from English thread to press fit and back again
I was cleaning out the back shelf at the shop in Portland last week and found a box of old threaded bottom bracket cups from around 2008, back when pretty much every frame we built up was English threaded. Then press fit hit maybe 2012 and it felt like every new frame coming through the door had some variant, BB30, PF30, BB86, and half of them creaked within 6 months. I bet I installed more thread-together conversions between 2016 and 2020 than actual press fit bearings, and the tool drawer got real crowded with drifts and extractors. Now the last 10 or so frames I've built up have all been threaded again, some even T47. It's funny how the industry swings back around once riders get tired of clicking sounds on every pedal stroke. Has anyone else noticed their frame orders shifting back to threaded, or is it just the brands we happen to carry?
