Bottom bracket tool slipped and rounded my shiny new BB cup
I was torquing down a Shimano Hollowtech II BB on a Trek Emonda last weekend and my Park Tool BBT-69 just popped off the splines at 40 Nm. Turns out the cup was greased too well from the factory and the tool didn't have enough bite. Anyone else had that happen or did I just get a bad batch of tools?

I used to think tool slip was always user error. That "greased too well from the factory" part really hit home. I had the exact same thing happen with a SRAM DUB on a Felt, tool just walked off the splines at 35 Nm and I swore it was my fault until I read this. Now I wonder if the factory grease is just too thin for a good bite, especially on those new Shimano cups with the tight spline tolerances.

Yes! "Greased too well from the factory" is such a real thing. I had the same issue with a brand new Ultegra crankset, tool literally popped off at like 40 Nm and I was so mad. I thought I was going crazy or just bad at torquing stuff lol. I've started wiping off that factory grease from the splines and putting on a thicker Park Tool grease instead, and honestly I haven't had a slip since. It's annoying that we even have to do that, but at least it's a cheap fix.
