TIL at a BBQ competition in Kansas City you need to watch your wood supply closely

I went to the American Royal BBQ contest last Saturday and noticed something worrying. A pitmaster named Dave from Texas told me his whole trailer of hickory got stolen overnight while he was sleeping. He had to borrow wood from three other teams to finish his brisket. Has anyone else had their supplies swiped at a big event like this?

Watch your stuff like a hawk at those big competitions. I've been doing KCBS events for about five years now and learned the hard way after someone walked off with my custom offset smoker thermometer setup during a midnight cook. A lot of these bigger contests have hundreds of teams crammed together and it's easy for folks to just grab what isn't tied down. I actually had a guy from Nebraska tell me last year he lost his whole cooler of pork shoulders overnight, just gone. Now I chain my wood pile to the trailer hitch and keep anything small locked in the car. Are you going to start locking things up differently now after hearing about Dave?

Did you lock your cooler to the table too? I had my whole rib rack vanish at a competition in Texas.
