Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store who saw me picking up lighter fluid

Stood there with a 12 pack of Kingsford and a can of fluid and he just goes 'you know that stuff ruins the taste right?' Switched to a chimney starter that same day and my ribs actually taste like smoke now instead of gas. Anyone else have that moment where someone called you out on your setup?

I mean, is the lighter fluid taste really that big of a deal? I've had plenty of backyard burgers and dogs cooked over direct flame with fluid and they were fine. I switched to a chimney too and maybe my food is a little cleaner but it's not like I was serving people gas-soaked meat before.

oh man, that's exactly the kind of wakeup call I needed too but from a different direction. I was at a BBQ competition a few years back, just watching, and this older guy saw me using a cheap charcoal starter with the fluid and he literally just shook his head and walked away. I felt so called out (embarrassingly) that I went home and ordered a charcoal chimney that night, and yeah, it's night and day difference. My chicken used to have this weird chemical hint to it that I thought was just "the way it is" but nope, I was ruining everything. Now I even use a little electric starter sometimes because I'm too impatient for newspaper, but it still tastes clean.
