Zip tied a $3 dish rack to my railing to hold 6 herbs and the basil finally gets real sun
My south facing spot was wasted on the floor so I rigged the rack at chest height, and after 2 weeks the basil grew 4 new leaf sets while the pots below stayed leggy, so now I'm wondering if anyone has tilted a rack at an angle to catch even more light or if that just dumps rain straight into the pots.
Man, the image of a dish rack zip tied to a railing is sending me, you basically built your basil a fire escape. Tilting it sounds smart in theory but yeah, one good storm and your pots turn into little swimming pools, so maybe test it with the cheap stuff first. You could also just shim the front of each pot with a pebble or a bottle cap so the water drains out instead of soaking the roots. Idk, half my plants died from me overthinking drainage, so maybe don't listen to me. Either way that basil is clearly living its best life up there while the floor pots are down there doing their sad little stretch.
Bottle caps under the front edge worked for my peppers last summer, just raise the pot like a quarter inch so water runs out the bottom hole instead of sitting there. Cheap trick but it saved me from root rot after I drowned two rounds of seedlings. The dish rack setup is honestly genius though, that basil is never going back to floor life.
