Visited my cousin in Chicago and saw her balcony setup

She's got these long, narrow planters hanging right over the railing, growing cherry tomatoes and bush beans. The whole thing is maybe 3 feet deep but she's packed in a ton of plants. It got me thinking about my own small space and how I could copy that. Has anyone else tried those railing planters for veggies?

Hold up, "game changer" is a stretch, @riley55. Those rail planters are a huge pain. The wind knocks them around, they dry out super fast in the sun, and mine always ended up leaking dirty water down the side of my building. Felt like more trouble than it was worth for a handful of beans.

Tried those once, but my green thumb is more of a beige thumb (the plants didn't make it).

Oh those railing planters are a game changer! I did the same thing with herbs on my fire escape last year, it's crazy how much you can grow in a tiny strip.
