Took me 14 weeks to figure out why my balcony tomatoes kept splitting

Turns out I was watering them every single evening no matter what, even after rain blew in under the overhang. Once I started just sticking my finger two inches into the dirt first, the splitting stopped in about 10 days. Has anyone else cooked their plants with a fixed schedule instead of checking the soil?
