The old guy in the apartment above me showed me his tomato setup on a Tuesday, and I still copy it
Back when I first started growing stuff on my balcony in 2019, my neighbor Sal, who was like 80, knocked on my door and handed me two empty 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. He said his father used the same buckets on a fire escape in Brooklyn in the 50s, and that mine were drowning because I had no drainage at all, which was true. Does anyone else still use free buckets from a neighbor instead of buying the fancy fabric pots?
Wondering if this is really as big a deal as people make it. Drowning your plants is bad, sure, but a bucket is a bucket, and free is free. My uncle grew tomatoes for years in old paint cans with a few holes punched in the bottom and they did fine, so I'm not sold that the container matters much at all. Seems like the real magic was Sal bothering to knock on your door, not the plastic. Plants want dirt, water, and light, and a five gallon bucket gives them that no different than a thirty dollar fabric pot from the store. Maybe I'm wrong though, since I've killed my fair share of basil either way.
